OpenAI collects data from ChatGPT users to further train and fine-tune its services. OpenAI has already gotten a glimpse of this future through its o1 model, and the results have been mixed. OpenAI announces the release of its o1 model, which demonstrates complex reasoning capabilities. The feature is also still exclusive to ChatGPT users who have a Plus, Team, Enterprise or Education plan.

It is now available to both paying and non-paying ChatGPT users, with usage limitations of course. However, it was labeled underwhelming by some users due its performance shortly after its release. For example, the new model doubles its context window from 128,000 tokens in GPT-4o to 256,000 tokens in GPT-5.

The Pro launch coincided with the release of the o1 model, providing unlimited access to o1 and advanced voice mode. In March 2025, OpenAI updated ChatGPT to generate images using GPT-4o instead of DALL-E. Users interact with ChatGPT through conversations which consist of text, audio, and image inputs and outputs. They can explicitly tell ChatGPT to remember aspects of the Rolldorado casino conversation, and ChatGPT can use these details in future conversations. By January 2023, ChatGPT had become the fastest-growing consumer software application in history, gaining over 100 million users in two months.
The laborers were exposed to toxic and traumatic content; one worker described the assignment as “torture”. OpenAI’s outsourcing partner was Sama, a training-data company based in San Francisco, California. Similar to a phone’s auto-complete feature, ChatGPT uses a prediction model to guess the most likely next word based on the context it has been provided. ChatGPT Team lets companies create shared workspaces with settings that apply to all users, as well as the ability to share proprietary data sets. This update allows ChatGPT to remember details from previous conversations and tailor its future responses accordingly.
This could enable ChatGPT to keep track of larger documents and conversations, and to handle more complex projects. In August 2025, OpenAI released GPT-5, its fastest and smartest model to date, and the current language model for ChatGPT. OpenAI claims that GPT-5 outperforms past models in math, real-world coding, multimodal understanding and health knowledge, and is also less likely to hallucinate or make false claims. It can also be fine-tuned for specific use cases such as legal documents or medical records, where the model is trained on domain-specific data. In January 2023, the International Conference on Machine Learning banned any undocumented use of ChatGPT or other large language models to generate any text in submitted papers. It is designed to generate human-like text and can carry out a wide variety of tasks.

Robin Bauwens, an assistant professor at Tilburg University, found that a ChatGPT-generated peer review report on his article mentioned nonexistent studies. A 2023 study reported that GPT-4 obtained a better score than 99% of humans on the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. Stanford researchers reported that GPT-4 “passes a rigorous Turing test, diverging from average human behavior chiefly to be more cooperative.” Released in February 2025, GPT-4.5 was described by Altman as a “giant, expensive model”. In July, OpenAI released ChatGPT agent, an AI agent that can perform multi-step tasks. It is capable of writing software, answering codebase questions, running tests, and proposing pull requests.

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot capable of having conversations with people and generating unique, human-like text responses. Many individuals use ChatGPT and comparable large language models (LLM) for mental health and emotional support. OpenAI acknowledged that there have been “instances where our 4o model fell short in recognizing signs of delusion or emotional dependency”, and reported that it is working to improve safety. It can also critique the user’s writing, summarize long documents and translate text from one language to another.

GPT-5 vs. GPT 4o

It can generate plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers known as hallucinations. The chatbot can facilitate academic dishonesty, generate misinformation, and create malicious code. The ethics of its development, particularly the use of copyrighted content as training data, have also drawn controversy. This includes text-to-image models such as Stable Diffusion and large language models such as ChatGPT. As of 2023, there were several pending U.S. lawsuits challenging the use of copyrighted data to train AI models, with defendants arguing that this falls under fair use.

OpenAI announces the ChatGPT Pro plan, a new premium plan for ChatGPT users to access even more features. OpenAI announced that it is letting users buy goods directly in ChatGPT through a feature called Instant Checkout. So far, users can make single-item purchases from domestic sellers on online marketplace Etsy, as well as some merchants on Shopify’s e-commerce platform.

ChatGPT is powered by a large language model made up of neural networks trained on a massive amount of information from the internet, including Wikipedia articles and research papers. In March 2023, a bug allowed some users to see the titles of other users’ conversations. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that users were unable to see the contents of the conversations. […] It’s also a way to understand the “hallucinations”, or nonsensical answers to factual questions, to which large language models such as ChatGPT are all too prone. ChatGPT’s training data only covers a period up to the cut-off date, so it lacks knowledge of recent events. The integration used ChatGPT to write prompts for DALL-E guided by conversations with users.
